A Song For You – Leon Russell

There are two artists I really think are the best in covering songs – The Beatles and Ray Charles. When they cover not their original songs, they transformed them into their own, and a lot of times, rendered them in much better way than the originals. Ray Charles covered The Beatles, too, and brought new character to Eleanor Rigby (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq5Oyza1afg), Yesterday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QroEbNejFs), The Long and Winding Road (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIQTxQz_hvQ), Let It Be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eof2c5fTcI8) and Something (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8fKPVF-r-Y) and breathed new life to them. Of course, The Beatles renditions, on the other hand, are mistaken for the originals; listen to Till There Was you, Please Mr. Postman, Twist and Shout, Rock N Roll Music.

Ray’s other rendition of one song written by Leon Russell, A Song For You, surpassed far greatly the original. The link below is the  proof of it.

This video is filmed on the occasion of Willie Nelson’s 70th birthday celebration with the composer Leon Russell taking on the first verse who passed the second to Willie; the rest was Ray’s whose version is admittedly most popular and much superior. The audience hands-down agreed.

But I believe the lyrics are far too great not to give credit to the writer. Leon did a good job at it and it will remain forever a classic popular song. “I love you in a place where there’s no space or time…/And when my life is over, remember when we were together/We were alone and I was singin’ my song for you.”

A Song For You by Leon Russell

I’ve been so many places in my life and time
I’ve sung a lot of songs, I’ve made some bad rhymes
I’ve acted out my life in stages, with ten thousand people watching
But we’re alone now and I’m singin’ this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be, baby
I’ve treated you unkindly but girl can’t you see
There’s no one more important to me
So darling can’t you please see through me
‘Cause we’re alone now and I’m singin’ my song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth, withholdin’ nothin’
But you came out in front and I was hiding, yeah
But now I’m so much better so if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody ’cause my love’s in there hiding

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for my life, ’cause you’re a friend of mine
And when my life is over, remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singin’ my song for you

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I’ve loved you for my life, yes, you’re a friend of mine
And when my life is over, remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singin’ my song for you, yes
3x
We were alone and I was singin’ this song for you, baby
We were alone and I was singin’ my song
Singin’ my song, singin’ my song, singin’ my song
Singin’ my song
