This Masquerade

One local radio station I dig has this feature of two songs bearing the same title. For example, So Far Away by Carole King and then in the early ’80s Dire Straits came out with its own. Now I want to feature songs sung by various artists as I am wont to do anyway.

This Masquerade features George Benson with his jazzy version and The Carpenters with their pop rendition. Leon Russell has his own.

Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding
Understanding anywhere
We’re lost in a masquerade

Both afraid to say we’re just to far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We’re lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of weeping disappear
Every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try

To understand the reasons
That we carry on this way
We’re lost in a masquerade

Now the writer-musician Leon Russell. Leon has done a lot of good songs popularized by other artists. His original versions usually pale in comparison to other more popular artists. I feel his voice and style is more left-field. His greatest song for me Song For You, which The Carpenters also covered.
