Following Paul McCartney on social media sure paid off for 300 lucky Pioneertown, California locals yesterday afternoon. At approximately 1:00 PM EST, Paul tweeted out the details of his surprise show, which would take place at the western-themed bar Pappy & Harriets Pioneertown Palace that night.
According to Setlist FM, McCartney and his band ended up playing a 21-song set, which was packed with Beatles songs. After closing out the gig with “Hey Jude,” McCartney returned the stage for an encore performance of the Wings song “Hi, Hi, Hi,” and the Beatles classics, ‘Birthday” and “I Saw Her Standing There.”
“When he tried to end his set with ‘Hey Jude’ after an hour and 15 minutes, he got shrieks before most everyone began singing along,” The Desert Sun reported. “‘I can’t stop this thing!’ McCartney said. Then he came back for an encore of three more songs.” According to the publication, jokester McCartney kicked off his set by saying “Welcome to Pappy and Harriet’s. This is the biggest gig we ever played!”
A fan captured the second song of McCartney’s set, The Beatles classic “A Hard Days Night” on camera. The music legend can be heard saying “this is fantastic here in Pioneertown,” before launching into the song in the video below.
