Most people think of punk rock as something that started in the late ’70s. But the real event that ignited the punk revolution took place much earlier—on February 10, 1971, to be precise. And it didn’t happen at CBGBs, Max’s Kansas City or any other rock club or dive bar. Punk rock was actually born in a church—St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery. So at least it was downtown Manhattan. The event itself wasn’t a rock gig; it was a poetry reading. But one of the poets reading that evening was Patti Smith. And she’d decided to disrupt the usual poetic proceedings by incorporating an electric guitar into her performance.”
