The Grateful Dead – Touch of Grey

I used to consider American Beauty as the best GD album. There’s still time to change my mind, right? In The Dark it is. A month ago, I was listening to this album for a long trip home. Since then, it has accompanied me throughout. Touch of Grey used to be one favorite, it is still is, but with some better insights and feel about it now in spite of its “quasi-dystopian lyrics.”

WIKI:Touch of Grey” is a 1987 single by the Grateful Dead, and is from the album In the Dark. The song is known for its refrain “I will get by / I will survive”. It combines quasi-dystopian lyrics with a pop tempo. The music was composed by Jerry Garcia, and the lyrics were written by Robert Hunter. It was also released as a music video, the first one by the Grateful Dead.

First performed as an encore on September 15, 1982 at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, it was finally released on In the Dark in 1987. The song got into the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 9, and reached number 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, the only song by the band ever to do so on both charts. It was released as a single with “My Brother Esau” and later “Throwing Stones”, and has appeared on a number of albums and collections.

Must be getting early, clocks are running late.
Paint by number morning sky, looks so phony.
Dawn is breaking everywhere, light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains I don’t care ’cause it’s alright
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

I see you’ve got your fists out, say your piece and get out.
Guess I get the gist of it but it’s alright
Sorry that you feel that way.
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining’s got a touch of grey
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

It’s a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the C’s
The ABC’s we all must face
To try to keep a little grace

It’s a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The ABC’s we all think of
To try to give a little love

I know the rent is in arrears, the dog has not been fed in years
It’s even worse than it appears but it’s alright

Cow is given kerosene, kid can’t read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene but it’s alright
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

It’s a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The ABC’s we all think of
To try to keep a little love

The shoe is on the hand it fits, there’s all there really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit ’cause it’s alright

Oh, well, a touch of gray, kinda suits you anyway,
That’s was all I had to say but it’s alright
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.

It’s a lesson to me,
The deltas and the East and the free
The ABC’s we all must face,
Try to save a little grace.

We will get by. We will get by. We will get by. We will survive
We will get by. We will get by. We will get by. We will survive
